April Carrier – Shaawanong kiniiw ikwe, Senior Indigenous Consultant & CEO ∞
April Carrier is the CEO and sole director of Maawandooshim Anokiitan / Managed Care Resource Corp., an Indigenous-led mental health and wellness organization providing trauma-informed, culturally safe care to communities across Canada.
A Métis mental health leader of French, Cree, Algonquin, and Scottish descent, April’s family lines trace to the Red River Métis through the McDonell–McKay, Ferris–Good, and McIsaac–Poitras families.
April has worked in the helping field since 2000 and has held chief executive roles since 2010. Her practice centres on culturally grounded, client-centred care that addresses root causes rather than symptoms alone. In 2010 she designed her first program — a rehabilitation program for female youth with a clinical component targeting the underlying drivers of addiction. She previously served as President of the Sudbury Métis Council, representing approximately 1,300 citizens.
Under her leadership, Managed Care Resource delivers care virtually, in office, and in community, supporting children, youth, adults, and elders. Programming is developed in partnership with the communities served and shaped by local priorities, strengths, and cultural context, integrating evidence-based therapies with culturally grounded supports and the guidance of Indigenous cultural advisors and elders.
April is also a Gladue writer, preparing reports for Métis, First Nations, and Inuit people involved in the justice system to help reduce the over-criminalization of Indigenous peoples.
